You probably don’t know this guy, but he’s Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, famed Appalachian moonshiner. He recently displayed his craft in the fascinating documentary, The Last One. Sutton, who’d been arrested again and was about to serve time for producing moonshine, was found dead in his home yesterday. One of a dying breed of mountain men who create elaborate stills for making homegrown liquor, Sutton was a folk hero and a caretaker of an age-old tradition. May he rest in peace.

It’s so sad to see the last keepers of our Appalachian traditions pass. And someone please explain to me how the ATF improves society by pursuing prosecution of a cultural icon. Don’t they have some REAL problems on the border to absorb their time and energy!

@AGreenEyeDevil: AMEN! I cannot understand how this guy and his still were harming society. I mean, if people are allowed to brew their own beer and make their own wine, why can’t they make liquor? It makes no sense at all.

Popcorn was a convicted felon. He was caught with a weapon. That is why the judge couldn’t look the other way.
